LIGHTNING PROTECTION

Lightening Protection Systems

Lightning Protection

The function of lightning protection systems is to protect structures from fire or mechanical destruction and to prevent that persons in buildings are injured or even killed. An overall lightning protection system consists of external lightning protection (lightning protection/earthing) and internal lightning protection (surge protection).

Functions of an lightning protection system:
  • Interception of direct lightning strikes via an air-termination system
  • Safe discharge of lightning current to earth via a down-conductor system
  • Distribution of the lightning current in the ground via an earth-termination system

Isolated Air-Termination Systems

Our Services

  • Offer for the concept development including detailed engineering and cost-optimised design
  • General drawings of the lightning protection system (CAD)
  • Detailed mounting drawings of the air-termination systems (CAD)
  • Calculation of separation distances according to IEC 62305
  • Bills of material (material offer, if any)
  • Description of the lightning protection concept
  • On-site inspection (according to prior agreement)

Required Information

  • Selected class of LPS of the object
  • Earth-termination system of the object
  • Photos
  • Drawings (if any)
  • Ex zone plans (for system located in a hazardous area)
  • Information on the wind load (wind speed, building height above sea level)
Lightning Protection Testing
Once a lightning protection system is installed, it must be professionally tested at least once a year to ensure it is capable of conducting a potential lightning strike to a safe earthing point. This ensures compliance with the Electricity at Work Act 1989, BS6651 and BS EN 62305.
